Key Tax Deadlines for October 2025

October is here, signaling not just crisp fall weather, but also crucial tax deadlines you can't afford to miss. For those who filed for a six-month extension, mark October 15 as the final cutoff to submit your 2024 Form 1040 and settle any outstanding taxes. Remember, missing these deadlines can result in penalties that could impact your bottom line.

Time and Money

October 10 - Reporting Tips to Your Employer

If you’re employed in a tipping industry and received more than $20 in tips during September, IRS Form 4070 must be filed with your employer by October 10. Your employer will then withhold the necessary FICA and income taxes. If your regular income doesn't cover these withholdings, the shortfall will be noted in box 8 of your annual W-2. You’ll need to address this when filing your return for the year.

October 15 - Managing Foreign Financial Interests

October 15 is also the due date for taxpayers who received an automatic six-month extension for reporting foreign financial accounts. You'll need to complete Form FinCEN 114 and submit it to the Department of the Treasury. Staying compliant keeps you protected against unexpected penalties.

October 15 - Individual Tax Filing

If you were granted an extension to file your income tax return for 2024, October 15 is your hard deadline to file Form 1040 as well as pay any taxes, interest, and penalties due. The earlier you finalize these details, the less stress you'll encounter, allowing you to focus on what you do best—running your business.

Weekend and Holiday Extensions:
If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the next business day becomes the new due date, giving you a slight reprieve in filing obligations if needed.

Disaster Area Extensions:
In cases where an area is declared a disaster zone, the IRS provides extended deadlines to accommodate those affected. To see if you qualify for a deadline extension due to a disaster, visit the official FEMA or IRS websites for the most recent updates.
