Key December 2025 Tax Deadlines: Prepare and Optimize

As we wrap up 2025, it's crucial to stay on top of your tax-related tasks, including year-end planning, tip reporting, and final deductible payments. Here’s a quick rundown of critical deadlines this December to keep your financial journey smooth and stress-free.

December 1 - Time for Year-End Tax Planning

December provides an opportunity for strategic tax planning to maximize your financial outcomes for 2025. Significant income changes, adjustments in marital or dependent status, or property sales could impact your tax liabilities, so it’s wise to book a consultation for personalized planning advice tailored to your circumstances.

December 10 - Report Tips to Employer

If you’re a tipped employee who received more than $20 in tips during November, report these to your employer by December 10 using IRS Form 4070. Your employer will withhold applicable FICA and income taxes from your wages. If your wages don't cover the required withholdings, the uncollected amount will be detailed on your W-2, and you’ll need to settle this when filing your tax return.

For those born before January 1, 1952, the deadline to make necessary withdrawals from a Traditional IRA without a penalty is December 31. If you turned 73 this year, you have until April 1, 2026, to make your first withdrawal for the tax year 2025. However, ensure arrangements are in place if your financial institution is closed on December 31.

December 31 - Last Day to Pay Deductible Expenses for 2025

Ensure any deductible expenses you want to claim for the 2025 tax return are paid by December 31. Note this excludes contributions to IRA, SEP, or Keogh plans, which can extend beyond December 31.

Stay Ahead of the Game: Ensure all actions are finalized before December 31, as some financial institutions may be closed.

Weekends & Holidays: Should any deadline fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is automatically extended to the next business day that isn't a holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions:

If your area is marked as a disaster zone, filing and payment deadlines might be extended. Check for current designations on FEMA and IRS websites to confirm eligibility for extensions.
