January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

With the start of 2026, it’s crucial for individuals to stay on top of key tax deadlines. Whether you're making estimated tax payments or reporting tips, January has several important dates to remember in order to keep your tax planning on track. Here's what you need to know.

January 2 – Schedule Your Tax Appointment

As the new year begins, so does tax season. It’s time to book your tax preparation appointment if you haven’t already. Don't wait until schedules fill up—get ahead of the rush for a stress-free tax season.

January 12 – Report Tips to Your Employer

Employees earning tips must report any amount over $20 received in December to their employer by January 12. Use IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement including your signature; name, address, and Social Security number; employer details; the reporting period; and total tips for that time. Timely reporting ensures proper withholding of FICA and income taxes from your wages. If your wages aren’t enough to cover these withholdings, your employer will note the shortfall on box 8 of your W-2, which you must pay with your tax return.

January 15 – Final Estimated Tax Installment Due

Prepare to submit your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for 2025 by January 15. Failing to meet this deadline means filing your 2025 return and settling your total tax bill by February 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.
