Illinois Doctor Convicted for Concealed Assets and Tax Fraud

An Illinois physician from Lake Forest, Dr. Krishnaswami Sriram, has been sentenced to 34 months in federal prison. This outcome follows his admission to a complex scheme involving health care fraud, asset concealment, and tax evasion. Dr. Sriram’s actions led to approximately $1.6 million in lost tax revenue for the U.S. government from 2011 to 2017.[Source]

Dr. Sriram employed several deceptive tactics to elude tax responsibilities. Notably, he fraudulently transferred ownership of two rental properties to his children—without their awareness—while continuing to collect rental income. Such sham transfers are notorious for obscuring true ownership and income streams.[Image 2]

Further complicating his financial web, Sriram moved approximately $700,000 from U.S. bank accounts to assets overseas in India, significantly muddling asset visibility. Additionally, when applying for an "offer-in-compromise" to settle tax debt with the IRS, he intentionally omitted vital financial information, failing to disclose his U.S. investment accounts, offshore holdings in India, and ownership of the aforementioned properties.

This deliberate misrepresentation papered over his capability to pay, resulting in substantial financial losses for the IRS. This case highlights the critical importance of transparency in financial reporting, especially when negotiating with tax authorities.
